ASTON VILLA 2 TOTTENHAM 1

Two goals from two Aston Villa centre backs secured a 2-1 victory over Tottenham.

An Ashley Young free kick was headed in by Olof Mellberg in the 40th minute to give Villa the lead.

But Spurs improved in the second half and Jermain Defoe - who was handed a start ahead of Robbie Keane - equalised with an acrobatic volley after a Dimiter Berbatov header in the 79th minute.

Spurs looked like they might go on to win it, but their vulnerability to set pieces was again evident when Jamie O'Hara was left marking Martin Laursen for a Gareth Barry corner in the 84th minute.

The Villa defender lost his man to head the winner past Paul Robinson.

An unhappy Gus Poyet suggested Spurs may have to consider big changes in the January transfer window.
